At Purple Rose Doula Services, we’re committed to being there for you whenever you need us. There are some questions that are often asked of doulas, so we have taken the time to prepare some frequently asked questions for your convenience.

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional that provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client

What services does a doula provide?

There are many different types of doulas. Some of the more common ones are Birth, Postpartum, Antepartum/Prenatal, Bereavement, & Fertility

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?

Midwives provide medical care through your pregnancy, birth and early postpartum. Doulas provide non medical, family centered care.

Why should I hire a doula for after my birth?

While most people associate doulas with labor and birth, having support during the fourth trimester can be incredibly beneficial. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, having a postpartum doula in your home can help ease the transitions within the family. While their primary focus is on the well-being of the parents, they also offer assistance with newborn care, feeding support, meal preparation, and light household tasks.

When should I hire a doula?

It is recommended to begin meeting doulas as soon as possible to find one that is the right fit for your family.

How does having a doula benefit both me and my partner?

A doula’s goal is to provide non judgemental family centered care, ensuring that everyone in the family feels respected, included and heard with compassion, all while acknowledging their values, traditions and perspectives(even the family pet!)

What is the cost of hiring a doula?

Fees can vary from doula to doula. On average, in Alberta, Birth doulas can range anywhere from $700-1600 and Postpartum Doulas are typically between $25-45/hour.

How do I find the right doula for me?

I recommend meeting with a few different doulas in order to find one that aligns with your goals and makes you feel at ease in their presence.

Do you offer breastfeeding assistance?

Yes. I am available to help you achieve your feeding goals whether that includes breast/chest feeding, formula feeding, part time and/or exclusive pumping or a combination of any of the above.

What is your approach to supporting clients during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum?

My goal is to provide non judgemental support to you and your partner, ensuring your concerns are heard and that you feel empowered on this journey.

Do you have a plan already in place for me in the case of a loss?

Pregnancy and Infant loss sadly affects 1 in every 4 pregnancies. If this were to occur , I would provide local referrals for support as needed, that best suit your circumstances.

What happens if my primary doula is unavailable when I go into labor?

Most doulas have a reliable back up team of doulas available to take their place if necessary.

Do you offer prenatal education or childbirth preparation classes?

While I do not currently provide this service, please see my resources page for some local businesses that do.

Can you provide references or testimonials from previous clients?

Absolutely! I have received some wonderful reviews on google and I am happy to connect you with previous clients with their permission of course.

What happens during the initial consultation with a doula?

This first meeting is meant to see how we connect on an informal basis. For your convenience, this can be done via video chat or an in person meeting for a quick cup of coffee at a local shop.
