Motherhood for me wasn’t a seamless journey. Our first pregnancy ended in an early miscarriage, our second, a daughter, passed away shortly after her birth due to a severe birth defect. Following that loss, we found ourselves pregnant with our oldest son who was diagnosed in utero with a congenital heart defect. This resulted in several weeks in NICU, and four open heart surgeries within the first few years of his life. We were lucky enough to go on to have two more healthy children, however, they too were not textbook experiences, including some serious breastfeeding challenges.
